Ways for the University to “Downgrade” Your Mind Part 2

So, here are other 3 ways for university studying to downgrade your mind abilities. See first 4 ways here.

Stress

It is a usual thing for university life of a student. Many people can see you all the time through; you heavily depend on your grades; and you often need to hide and mask your actions. In such environment it is more and more difficult to react on stress situations adequately.

Stressed Student

Yale Stress center investigated 100 people who passed through the strongest stress situations in the past. Results showed that the stronger was the stress a person passed through, the bigger was the brain zone engaged. These abilities are crucial for a human to be able to learn from his or her own experience. Moreover, stress lowers the number of neurons in one’s brain, decreasing its ability to process and store new information.

Sleep

The need to get up early or spend sleepless nights to prepare for lectures can make you become less clever. In Barclay’s University, there was a hamster experiment called to find out how the lack of sleep influences mind abilities. They changed the sleep schedule of hamsters every 6 days. As a result, the neural activity of animals lowered by 50%. Some of them even weren’t able to find the wheel.

Hamsters had been demonstrating lowering mind abilities during a month after coming back to a normal daily schedule. So, the lack of sleep can have long-term consequences.

Lectures

Statistic shows that most part of a university time students spend on listening to someone else’s dialogue. That is the way how they learn. But at the same time, this way of learning lowers your ability to make clever decisions.

24 students answered questions about how they use certain financial possibility, if they would use a suitable case in this or that situation. They were passing through MRI procedure simultaneously. In some cases, students received recommendations from experts, and in some – they didn’t.

Mostly, research participants chose ways recommended by experts, even if that decision had been connected to a risk. And when there were no recommendations, they took risks into account and made decisions by themselves basing on all the available data, and stated their answer after. According to MRI diagnostics, the brain activity was higher in that case.
